FOLK TALES Folk Tales is a collection of genre pieces in the sense that the term is used of paintings. It represents small-scale works that delineate typical social types in their surroundings and depends on accuracy of observation heightened by humour. A full range of metres is employed to do this, from the staccato trochaic diary of a pub grub and the pathetic hero-worshipping sapphics of a weak layabout, to the poisoned anapaests of a middle class gossip.
